It’s More Than Anti-Bullying:

Creating a Culture of Belonging in Schools and Beyond

Every day, we are bombarded with stories about bullying, school violence, and the mental health crisis affecting our students, students, and families. It’s become a part of our daily news cycle, but despite all the headlines and awareness campaigns, the problem isn’t getting any better. We’re missing something. Instead of just reacting to the crisis, we need to change the narrative. The solution? Sense of Belonging. Not just as a talking point, but as a lifestyle that we live, breathe, and model every single day.

I talk to principals, counselors, teachers, and parents every day and they all ask me the same question, what in the hell are we going to do about this?

The Crisis We Can’t Ignore

The statistics are heartbreaking:

1 in 5 students experience bullying each year.

1 in 6 youth struggle with mental health disorders.

Suicide is now the second leading cause of death for young people aged 10-24.

These aren’t just numbers; they represent real children, real families, and real communities that are suffering. School violence, bullying, and poor mental health have taken center stage in conversations, but we are not focusing enough on proactive solutions. Talking about it isn't enough. It's time we BE about it by creating a true sense of belonging for every student, staff member, family, and community. This is not a once-a-year initiative; it is a lifestyle change.

Our Words Matter—They Shape Our World

Think about this: If I tell you not to think about a purple cow on roller skates, what do you immediately think of? Exactly—a purple cow on roller skates! Our words are incredibly powerful, and the way we talk about things matters. We need to stop focusing on the words we’re trying to avoid, and instead, start speaking the words that build the world we want.

When we talk about anti-bullying, we’re still centered on the bully. But what if we shifted our focus entirely? What if, instead of reacting to bullying, we dedicated ourselves to creating belonging? When we choose our words carefully, we create environments that are centered on connection, unity, and care—the things we want to see more of. Let’s speak words into existence that we can practice every day, turning them into a sustainable lifestyle.

What Does Belonging Really Mean?

Belonging isn’t about tolerance or saying the right things. It’s about building environments where everyone feels seen, valued, and connected. It’s about ensuring that every student knows they are more than a statistic—they are an important part of the school community. Every teacher, every parent, every community member must be an active participant in creating this culture.

Imagine if every school focused on making sure that:

Every student had a trusted adult they could turn to.

Every staff member felt supported, valued, and united in purpose.

Every family felt included, informed, and connected to the school.

This is what changes schools. This is what reduces bullying, improves mental health, and stops violence before it starts. Belonging is prevention. It's the thing that makes students feel safe enough to ask for help and strong enough to stand up for one another.

The Ripple Effect: Belonging Across Schools, Homes, and Communities

When we create a sense of belonging in schools, the effect ripples through homes and entire communities.

Here’s how we BE about it in our daily lives

For Students:

Ensure they have access to social-emotional learning opportunities that build empathy and connections with others. Give students real ownership of their school community, letting them lead initiatives and have a voice.

For Families:

Create opportunities for families to build social capital and connect with each other through family nights, volunteering, and shared goals for the community.

For Teachers and Staff:

Provide ongoing support and resources to help them build positive, trusting relationships with students and each other. Recognize their efforts and include them in decision-making processes that affect the school culture.

Enough is enough.

We cannot sit by as students suffer in silence. We cannot wait for another tragedy to spark action. It’s time to stop being reactive and start being proactive. Our schools can be safe havens of belonging, but it will require a shift in priorities and a commitment to doing better.

We owe it to our kids to create a world where they know—beyond a doubt—that they matter.

Let’s get to work!
